The joys of moving

Most people dread moving….I’m not most people. I throughly enjoy it.

It’s a chance to rid yourself of things you no longer need. A fresh start. All of the ideas I’ve had stored in my head can finally come to light.

I FREAKING LOVE IT!!

Yes, the packing part kind of sucks, but unboxing everything and finding a new home for them excites me. That thrill of finding that perfect place for something.

Trying out new paint colours or wallpaper…Wainscotting…Light fixtures…I love it all!

One thing I’ve always done when purchasing a new home is make myself a book. A “Home Bible” so to speak. If you don’t do this, you need to immediately. It makes the whole process so much easier and organized.

I buy a blank notebook and make a section for each room in the house.

I then draw the layout of each room on one page with exact measurements, and on the opposite page I create a list of the following:

1) Things I have- These are things that are going into the room that I already own. Furniture, area rug, artwork etc..

2) Things I need – These are things I want to buy for that particular room. Such as new lighting fixture, new piece of furniture, decor etc.. I even go so far as to list what store it’s coming from and the price.

3) Things to do – This is a list anything that needs to be done. Paint the walls, wallpaper, change hardware or fixtures. You get the idea..

It’s basically getting everything that is stored in my brain down on paper.  I like having it laId out before me so that I can really envision it. As I’m sure you are aware, moving can be hectic. This helps…. a lot.

Another thing I do is make a vision board on my computer for each room. I print it off and bring it into the stores with me so at any point when shopping for things like accessories and decor, I can take a quick peek to remind myself of the look I am trying to achieve. It’s a great way to stay on track and ensure you are only getting things that fit the vibe.

I like to make the background of the vision board either the paint colour or wallpaper that will be going into that room, and then populate it with any other items that will be in there as well. Furniture, art work, textiles, etc.

I have attached the vision board I created for both Piper and Clementine’s new rooms so you can get a feel for what I’m talking about.

For Piper’s room I wanted to create something along the lines of “Teenage Cool”. She is about to turn 10, so I wanted to do something she would love now, but also something she can grow into. I basically thought of what I would have wanted my room to look like at that age and ran with it. Neon signs, Cool accents, Lots of colours and patterns. I would have died for this bedroom. It totally fits her personality.

For Clementines room, I’m going more “Boho Chic”. Still very cool, just a little more toned down and feminine with scalloped edges, tassels and fewer colours. I am going back and forth with the idea of adding wainscotting to the lower half of the walls and keeping the floral wallpaper seen on the vision board for just the tops. It will probably be a last minute decision.

We are moving in a month… wish me luck! I’ll bring you along for the ride.
